FUTURA FONT & PAUL RENNER | PERSONAL PROJECT
The challenges of this assignment were to design a two sided poster with typographic perfection and create imagery related to the font of choice. My font choice was Futura. I began researching Futura's history and its use in graphic design. The Futura family typeface is used today as headline and body type for notable corporate entities such as BEST BUY, and was used on the historical plaque left on the moon by Apollo 11. Futura has the appearance of efficiency and forwardness. It is a bold and confident looking font.
When designing the conceptual side of my poster i tried to bring out the qualities of the font that I discovered in my research. I chose 3 graphic elements; the "delta symbol" (which is part of the font family's keyboard alternatives) and the image of Paul Renner. The ruler symbolizes the font's geometric and mathematical qualities. I mirrored these graphic elements on the back. Instead of a ruler I positioned the Futura alphabet with wide spacing and leading to look like a ruler and kept the same proportions of the background colours as I did on the front design.
